The birth of a classic The Adirondack Design:
The Adirondack chair was designed in 1903 as a simple lawn chair made of 11 flat wood boards and was the work of Thomas Lee who used his family and friends as his controlled test group. He had a vision of a comfortable chair for his vacations in the Adirondack Mountains, for which they are named to this day.
He took his design idea to a carpenter friend as a source of revenue during the harsh winters of upstate New York. In turn his friend then patented the final design with wide armrests and offered the chairs to local summer residents.
Years later in 1938 Irving Wolpin received a patent for his rounded back and contoured seat design which is commonplace today.
Since then the original design has been reconfigured, copied with a host of different materials, regardless the classic design is still comfortable no matter what material it is made from. The question is how long the material in question will last.
The modern Adirondack chair can be still made with the classic wood or poly lumber which is recycled or virgin plastic making it not only comfortable but long lasting as well.
There is no mistaking the Adirondack design with its wide armrest, curved back and the comfortable contoured seat no matter what color, material or name that is attached to it.
What the heck is poly lumber?
The poly lumber used for this outdoor furniture is either virgin or recycled with the same shape as ordinary lumber commonly seen in outdoor decking and some park benches.
The main advantage of poly lumber is it is resistant to splitting/cracking and can be molded with or without simulated wood grain features.
It can be 100% recycled after its life-cycle unlike other materials, is environmentally friendly and requires far less maintenance than other woods and some compost materials.
