The early mention of hammocks was by Christopher Columbus in the 15^th Century upon his arrival in the new world. He made reference to the natives sleeping in as he called them nets.

4 Hammock Selection Criteria
You might not factor in some elements when making this important purchase and thing they are all the same. They are not! The variety goes far beyond what you may have expected and to make the best choice, you need to consider where it's going and who will use it. This will give you more bang for your buck with this backyard accessory.

1/ The selection in fabrics would be the most obvious choice you need to make. What do you like the feel of? Is moisture an issue? Surprisingly there are a number of synthetics that are as soft and comfortable as cotton and have the advantage of not holding moisture so and drying so fast that mildew is never an issue. Cotton is the soft natural feel so many of us still enjoy. Tried, tested and true. The choice is yours! With these typically staying outdoors long term, the fact that the hammock fibers are UV protected, strong and durable should be an important factor for purchase as well. You are investing in a wonderful outdoor piece of furniture and you want it to last. You want to avoid cheaply made units that wear in the sun, with the fibers degrading and being prone to sagging, ripping or tearing.

2/ The correct installation, set up and use of the hammock can bring up safety issues. Making sure the hammock secured properly, and the end anchors being able to withstand the weight are key elements. Also having it tied off on securely, another factor that you really don't want to leave as guess work. If necessary get a stand to make the hammock 100% secure, it won't tip and you can move it wherever you want. Another consideration is with respect to the rope style hammocks. If you have a dog or young children that may be on the hammock the open weave hammocks may be difficult for them to get in and out of. This can be a problem for some adults too! Think of who may be testing this out, and make sure it's a good feel, set up and strong enough.

3/ Size and weight tolerance need to be reviewed to insure that your hammock can withstand what you're going to put in it. For more than one person, you may want to look at a hammock with spreader bars that pull the fabric across into a flat surface. Also some hammocks take more weight than others. Some are not as wide or long, this is not only a consideration for who will be in it but where you are placing it. Look at the specifications carefully so you have the information you need to make your selection.

4/ The Color and pattern won't make it any more or less comfortable and enjoyable, however it will look great with the rest of your outdoor furnishings when you choose wisely. If you have worked to create an attractive cohesive look and feel to your outdoor living space you'll want to select a hammock that flatters your decor.
